Problem

Problem

The client engaged Cortec Global Services (CGS) to evaluate the storage conditions and assess the effectiveness of prior preservation work on a spare reactor head. This included a comprehensive corrosion inspection to ensure the asset remained in optimal condition during storage. The objective was to identify potential vulnerabilities, determine whether existing protective measures were adequate, and provide recommendations to mitigate corrosion risks.

Application

Application

This assignment focused on both inspection and preservation activities. Our team began by carefully removing MilCorr® VpCI® Shrink Film from the reactor head frame to allow a detailed inspection. Inside the packaging, VpCI®-309 and desiccant pouches were discovered, strategically placed to control moisture. During removal, minor punctures in the MilCorr® wrap were observed along the bottom, allowing any condensation to escape without affecting the overall protection. Once the outer wrap was removed, our teams conducted a thorough video inspection to assess the reactor head’s condition. Based on our findings, several recommendations were provided to enhance long-term storage preservation: repairing or replacing the storage facility’s air-conditioning unit to mitigate temperature and humidity risks; applying MilCorr® in combination with VpCI® EcoPouches 308 around the reactor head to maintain a controlled microenvironment; installing a temperature and humidity gauge inside or adjacent to the packaging for quarterly monitoring; placing small seep holes at the base of the packaging to channel condensation away from the asset; and integrating large zipper doors to facilitate convenient future inspections without compromising protective packaging.

Conclusion

Conclusion

The reactor head was preserved following CGS’s recommended procedures, ensuring comprehensive corrosion protection. All preservation products were applied promptly, safeguarding the asset against potential damage from temperature fluctuations and humidity. The project was executed efficiently and safely, demonstrating CGS’s expertise in full-service preservation and long-term asset protection. This assignment highlights our ability to combine advanced VCI solutions, meticulous inspection protocols, and issue practical storage recommendations to maintain asset integrity for critical industrial equipment.
