CGS was engaged to perform full-service preservation of 89 industrial-grade motors for a leading power systems manufacturer in Minnesota. The project scope covered the application of advanced preservation solutions across multiple lifecycle stages—including storage, fabrication and installation, and pre-commissioning or commissioning—particularly in the absence of detailed supplier preservation guidelines.
By leveraging CGS’s expertise in complex preservation and asset integrity management, the team ensured each motor received optimal protection against corrosion throughout its idle period.
To restore and protect the exposed metal surfaces, technicians first cleaned and prepped all affected areas using Cortec Corporation’s VpCI®-414, a high-performance cleaner and degreaser that removes temporary coatings. Once surfaces were properly treated, they were coated with VpCI®-377, a water-based corrosion inhibitor designed for temporary protection during storage and lay-up. All motors were stored on specially fabricated racks, each designed to hold ten units.

When assets remain idle for extended periods, implementing a comprehensive preservation strategy is essential to prevent corrosion, maintain mechanical integrity, and safeguard long-term reliability.
CGS recommends that each equipment type have its own tailored preservation plan, depending on material type and operational complexity. Effective methods include the use of VCI-based packaging, coatings as well as climate-controlled atmospheres to sustain asset protection and minimize degradation risks.
