Switching from traditional plastic wrapping to VpCI®-386, CGS revolutionized equipment preservation for an Australian mining client—cutting plastic waste by 74% while enhancing corrosion protection and sustainability.

Last year, we achieved a significant milestone with one of our Australian mining clients by reducing their single-use plastic in equipment preservation by an impressive 74%! This remarkable feat was accomplished by using Cortec Corporation’s VpCI®-386, a fast-drying, water-based acrylic one-coat system (topcoat) that can be applied DTM (Direct to Metal). It provides protection in harsh, outdoor, unsheltered applications.

VpCI®-386’s complex mixture of non-toxic, organic inhibitors offers protection that competes with most paints and zinc-rich primers. It also provides multi-metal protection and excellent UV resistance. VpCI®-386 is weldable and can be used to keep surfaces corrosion-free prior to welding. It can also be matched to most custom colors.

We decided to replace the wrapping used in previous years’ preservation projects for this client with VpCI®-386 for several compelling reasons:

  • Cost Efficiency: Wrapping can be out of scope for some clients, and VpCI®-386 offers a more cost-effective solution.

  • Durability: Wrapping needs to be replaced periodically, whereas VpCI®-386 provides long-lasting protection.

  • Equipment Safety: If the wrap is compromised, it can negatively affect the equipment. VpCI®-386 eliminates this risk.

  • Quality: The paint finish on refurbished equipment can be poor, making wrapping less effective. VpCI®-386 ensures consistent protection.

  • Ease of Application: Applying VpCI®-386 is easier and more cost effective than wrapping.

  • Service Readiness: There's no need to remove VpCI®-386 when returning equipment to service, saving time and effort.

  • Environmental Impact: By reducing single-use plastic, we significantly decreased the environmental footprint of our preservation process, contributing to a more sustainable future.

By switching to VpCI®-386 for this client, we not only reduced plastic waste but also enhanced the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our preservation process. This change aligns with our commitment to sustainability and innovation in corrosion protection. Our efforts support the broader ESG goals of reducing waste, promoting the use of environmentally friendly materials, and ensuring the longevity of critical assets.

Our Australian business CGS successfully executed this project, showcasing their expertise and dedication. This success story highlights our global reach and the collaborative efforts of our teams across different regions.
