An above ground pipeline river crossing located mere meters above the water and within the splash zone, next to a picturesque waterfall in a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), faced severe challenges from its environment. Constant exposure to rain, snow, humidity, and storm surges that could submerge the pipeline and heighten the risk of corrosion. These harsh and fluctuating environmental conditions posed a significant threat to the above ground pipeline’s lifespan. Effective corrosion protection was essential to ensure asset reliability and environmental compliance in this sensitive location.

Application

The corrosion protection solution had to be environmentally responsible, durable, and capable of withstanding impacts from debris during floods while also ensuring long-term protection. Due to the site's challenging access, only hand-carried equipment could be utilized. To facilitate surface preparation and ensure a controlled application, a fully enclosed habitat was constructed around the above ground pipeline. This measure minimized environmental contamination and maintained a dry working environment. Stopaq Paste CZ was applied to critical areas, including the cathodic protection weld points and any pitted surfaces. Following this, Stopaq Wrappingband CZ was uniformly applied along the above ground pipeline to deliver advanced corrosion prevention. For mechanical reinforcement, Stopaq Outerwrap PVC was layered over the Wrappingband. Additionally, Stopaq Outerglass Shield was applied in three spiral layers with a 50% overlap, creating a robust six-layer mechanical barrier. For UV Protection, the Outerglass Shield was then painted following the client’s specification, and an anti-climbing device was installed for added security. This comprehensive approach ensured that the above ground pipeline remained resilient to environmental stressors and impacts.
