Corrosion in food production facilities for brined food products such a pickles is a serious challenge, especially as these environments are exposed to high levels of salt and acidity.
Cortec Global Services U.S. recently completed a preservation project at a pickle factory in the United States that was featured as a Cortec Corporation case history. The project showcased our successful corrosion mitigation on a pickle factory's ceiling, enhancing safety and durability in their production environment.
Addressing Corrosion Challenges in the Pickling Industry
The factory faced an increasing problem: corrosion on the metal ceiling above its cold storage and packing area. This was caused by prolonged exposure to pickling brine, which contains corrosive elements like salt and vinegar. After successfully addressing a similar issue in a smaller brine room using Cortec Corporation’s advanced corrosion protection coatings, the factory chose to apply the solution to a much larger area.
Our Approach to Corrosion Mitigation
During a two-week shutdown, the Cortec Global Services U.S. team worked diligently to execute the project efficiently using top-tier surface preparation and the application of volatile corrosion inhibitor technology based protective coatings, trademarked as VpCI, from Cortec Corporation.
Despite recommendations to topcoat the entire ceiling, the factory opted to leave the rest of the rust-converting primer exposed to maintain a darker ceiling and prevent light reflection, which could affect the food product’s color.
Why choose Cortec Global Services U.S. and volatile corrosion inhibitor technology?
This project showcases the effectiveness of long-term corrosion protection solutions in demanding industrial environments.
The pickle factory had already seen successful results using these protective coatings in a smaller brine room, where the coating remained intact even after years of exposure. Their confidence in the solution led them to scale up the application, reinforcing the importance of proactive preservation management in food processing facilities.
